Navigating Legal Paths And Complexities In Real Estate And Business Law Across California

Nonprofit Organizations and Public Access to IRS Records

by | Jun 24, 2016 | Nonprofit

We all know that certain information regarding nonprofit organizations is public information.  If a person requests information such as the nonprofit’s tax returns, the organization is required to provide the information in a reasonable time.

The IRS has a new program which will provide electronic access to exempt organization’s information.  Specifically, electronically filed Forms 990, 990-EZ, and 990-PF annual returns will now be available in a machine-readable format through Amazon Web Services (AWS).  The filings from 2011 to the present will now be available.

The good news is the electronic files will not include donor data and certain personally identifiable tax-identification numbers will be redacted to prevent misuse of the data. Understanding the nonprofit disclosure requirements and its limitations are important for every tax-exempt organization, so if you have any questions regarding your organization’s responsibilities, please contact us today.
